"Every single day
And every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay
I'll be watching you "

Stalker song by The Police? Or the reality of living in 2022?

Every second of every day, millions of data points are being collected. From our computers, our phones, our smart home devices, our credit cards and our fitness trackers. Is it a blessing or a curse? It's all in how it's used.

How can we use this data to improve the conditions of humans on earth?

The key lies in interpretation. Analysis. Databases full of columns and rows contain so much information, but how do we coax it into telling us a story?

We use the tools at our disposal - languages and visualizations - to turn records and tables into actionable insights.

I've always been the kind of person to ask questions. "But WHY?" probably drove my parents nuts. They didn't even own an Encylopedia Britannica set, much less have pretty much the entire world of knowledge at their fingertips, but they did their best to satisfy my curiosity.

As I came into adulthood and the internet was born, a whole new world opened up for me. If you know how to ask the right questions, the world wide web will deliver the answers. Over the years I sometimes got frustrated when people would ask me to look something up for them (I remember when I first heard about "Let Me Google That For You" and laughed for a solid 15 minutes), but it did seem like I was better at it.

Computers, including the computers that run the internet, are machines. They're amazing machines that can deliver results in milliseconds -- if you know the right questions to ask, and how to ask them.

I have a knack for it. Not just knowing how to ask the questions (syntax is important) but WHAT questions to ask. I may be new at "data analysis" as a career, but I've been analyzing every piece of data I could get my hands on for most of my life.
